Islam Makhachev believes he has surpassed Jon Jones in greatness with Alexander Volkanovski fight

Published:

Islam Makhachev presented his argument for why he believes that in terms of brilliance in the UFC, he has surpassed Jon Jones. Mkahachev won a unanimous decision over Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284.

Jones has been on an extended break and has given up the UFC light heavyweight title since his salary disagreement with UFC President Dana White in May 2020. Before that, Jones won a competitive unanimous decision fight against Dominick Reyes at UFC 247. He was at the time the UFC’s top fighter, pound for pound.

After defending his lightweight title at UFC 284, Islam Makhachev might overtake Alexander Volkanovski as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world when the rankings are updated the following week. In light of this, Makhachev discussed during the post-fight news conference why he believes he is superior to Jones. He stated:

“You realise why? Jon Jones is a skilled combatant. He is the best, yet his most recent victory was by a razor-thin margin. He won’t be at his best after this fight, in my opinion. I defeated the best fighter in the entire planet, making me the best right now. I am therefore more deserving of this.

Similar to Makhachev, many appear to think that Jon Jones has lost some of the energy that once made him so well-known in the UFC. He will, however, have the opportunity to put a stop to such stories and make a powerful comeback when he fights Ciryl Gane at UFC 285.

Islam Makhachev reunites with Charles Oliveira backstage following UFC 284 victory

Backstage at UFC 284’s RAC Arena in Perth, Australia, following the main event, Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira shared a touching moment.

Makhachev defeated Charles Oliveira in the second round by submission to claim the vacant lightweight championship at UFC 280. Nevertheless, Alexander Volkanovski put on a strong display against the Dagestani, and his maiden title defence was far from an easy one.

Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira engaged in a touching conversation after Makhachev’s victory at UFC 284. Before shaking hands and giving hugs, a translator gave the Dagestani a few words from “do Bronx.”

In the aforementioned post-fight media interview, when asked about the potential challenger for his title, Islam Makhachev responded as follows:

“I need a true contender, not a fake one. A few individuals are about to turn up for a bogus fight. Whether you like me or not, I proved why I’m the best boxer in the world right now.”
