Dustin Poirier on potential rematch between Charles Oliveira and Islam

Makhachev

The highly awaited rematch between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev was scheduled to take place at UFC 294, which took place in October of this year. On the other hand, Makhachev ended up going up against Alexander Volkanovski because Oliveira was unable to recover from his injury and had to withdraw from the bout.

Since that time, it would appear like Oliveira is still the next in line for a shot at the title. During an interview with MMA Junkie, Dustin Poirier shared his thoughts on the matter, which came before of the possibility of a rematch. ‘The Diamond’ made the following statement, implying that Oliveira possesses the necessary skills to defeat Makhachev:

It is my belief that Oliveira is capable of winning that battle if he is in the right frame of mind, if he is the same person who fought me and who fought Chandler. I do not believe that he had any intention of competing against Islam Makhachev in that championship match. It seemed as though he had changed his mind about being there; it was as though he had given up on himself. That is the stance I take. Personally, I am aware that he possesses the competence to defeat the most skilled men in the world… It’s simply that if he gets his mind in the right place and is prepared to go, I believe he will be able to defeat him.

Particularly noteworthy is the fact that Islam Makhachev recently disclosed that he is not interested in rematching Charles Oliveira and is instead aiming for a fight with Justin Gaethje, who is the current champion of the BMF. In a video that was just uploaded on Gaethje’s YouTube account, he made a cryptic reference about the possibility of fighting Makhachev in the future.
