Mikey Musumeci, who holds the title of ONE Flyweight Submission Grappling World Champion, is ecstatic about the opportunity to compete against Shinya Aoki, a legend in the sport of ONE Championship and one of the first athletes he was allowed to watch compete.
At ONE Fight Night 15 on Prime Video, which will take place on October 6 at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, an openweight submission grappling bout between ‘Darth Rigatoni’ and ‘Tobikan Judan’ is scheduled to take place.
In an interview with ONE Championship, the Italian-American champion, who is 27 years old, revealed that he is experiencing some feelings of melancholy as he prepares for his fight against Aoki, who is 40 years old, and that it is a privilege for him to have the Japanese icon as his next opponent.
Mikey Musumeci is quoted as saying:
“You want to know something amusing that happened recently? Shinya competed in the very first ONE Championship competition that I ever watched; yet, I cannot specifically recall which match it was; nonetheless, I do recall that Shinya competed in it. It’s extremely wonderful because the very first match I ever watched on ONE Championship included him, and now I’m going to be competing against him in Asia. It’s a really cool thing for me, do you know what I mean? In addition, it is a privilege to share the stage with such a legendary figure. Simply put, it is an honor to roll with him while I still have the chance to do so in my lifetime. It’s quite cool, if you ask me. And I couldn’t be more effing excited!
Mikey Musumeci will be competing for the fourth time in ONE Championship (ONE) this year at ONE Fight Night 15. His world title, which he had earned in September of the previous year, had been successfully defended in all three of his prior bouts.
The Evolve MMA standout earned the victory over the Mongolian competitor Gantumur Bayanduuren by way of a unanimous decision back in January. After a break of four months, he returned and defeated Yemen’s Osamah Almarwai via submission to win the match. Then, in his most recent bout, which took place in August of this past year, he competed against Jarred Brooks, the ONE strawweight MMA world champion, in an all-champion grappling superfight, and won by submission.
After a busy year in 2022, during which he competed in three battles, including two mixed martial arts and one submission grappling bout, Shinya Aoki is fighting for the first time in this year.
