Northcutt stunned fans watching from all around the world as he quickly finished off the Pakistani mixed martial arts champion Ahmed Mujtaba by submitting him with a heel hook in the first round. As a result of Northcutt avoiding injury during the competition, he is now prepared to immediately rejoin the action. In response to a question about who his potential next opponent would be, the native of Texas disclosed that he is looking forward to rescheduling a fight he had planned to have with the legendary Japanese fighter Shinya Aoki:
“Yeah, so I’ve talked with ONE Championship, and we’re talking about making the match that I had before with Shinya come to life and happen now,” Northcut said during his appearance on Fistivities with KB & Renato Laranja. “We’re talking about making the match that I had before with Shinya come to life and happen now.” “So, I believe that getting to fight Shinya Aoki could be the next step,” the speaker said.

Shinya Aoki, a former ONE lightweight world champion, has been having a difficult time recently, losing three competitions in 2022, including two consecutive mixed martial arts bouts against Yoshihiro Akiyama and Saygid Izagakhmaev. He was also unsuccessful in his attempt to defeat the reigning lightweight submission grappling world champion of ONE, Kade Ruotolo, in a grappling bout.
