Following Charles Oliveira’s victory at UFC 288, he is once again considered a legitimate contender for the lightweight championship held by Islam Makhachev.
Makhachev took to Twitter after Oliveira defeated Beneil Dariush via first-round technical knockout to indicate that Oliveira was still “levels” below him. This came after the Brazilian’s stunning victory over Dariush. The Dagestani prevailed over ‘do Bronx’ at UFC 280 in the previous year, and Makhachev appears certain that he would prevail over Oliveira if they had to compete against one another again.
In a respectful and elegant manner, Charles Oliveira reacted to Islam Makhachev by saying:
“Thank you. The game is broken up into different levels. See you shortly”

Best of luck, Charles.
However, there are still levels to be completed in this game.

During the buildup to Charles Oliveira’s fight with Beneil Dariush at UFC 289. the Brazilian was sure that the version of ‘do Bronx’ that faced Islam Makhachev was a shell of his typical self.
During Oliveira’s post-fight address, he called out to the higher-ups at the UFC to schedule the rematch and declared that he would fight Makhachev in Abu Dhabi, which is considered to be Makhachev’s home region. According to the translation provided, he stated:
“There was no need for me to convey a message. You only saw 10% of me the last time, but this time you saw 120% of me. The victor has been anointed, and his name is Charles Oliveira. You already know the answer to that question, Dana [White], but I am the next one up for a title opportunity. Do you want me to go to [Makhachev’s] house and fight him? I’ll go, I’m ready!”
Dana White is “excited” for Islam Makhachev vs. Charles Oliveira 2
Following this past weekend’s UFC 289 event, UFC president Dana White made an appearance in front of the media.
Many people believed that if Beneil Dariush defeated Charles Oliveira in the fight that was going to be shown on pay-per-view, it would guarantee him a shot at the title against Islam Makhachev. The division, however, has been thrown into disarray as a result of the Brazilian’s spectacular TKO victory. Given that ‘do Bronx’ suffered a defeat at the hands of Makhachev at UFC 280 the previous year, the general belief was that the UFC would offer another contender a run at the championship.
On the other hand, Oliveira’s performance at UFC 289 has made it nearly hard to keep him from getting a rematch against Makhachev.
When asked about the potential of staging a rematch between the two, Dana White made the following statement:
“[Oliveira] looked like he belonged in the world championship tonight, and I can’t wait for him and Islam to face each other again… I’m merely pointing out that the [battle] is the one that makes sense. Let’s not make a game out of this; that’s the battle that makes the most sense. That is the fight that ought to take place, and I can’t wait to watch it once more.
