What Martin Nguyen wants is a rematch versus Thanh Le for the featherweight mixed martial arts gold. He says, “Give the fans what they want.”

Martin Nguyen, a former ONE world champion who conquered two different divisions, is hoping to be given the opportunity to reschedule his fight with Thanh Le for October 2020. This coming Sunday, January 28, ‘The Situ-Asian’ will make his return to the Circle when ONE Championship travels to Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan, for a packed ONE 165 show.

The Sydney native will face off against Garry Tonon, a submission expert who has previously challenged for the featherweight world title. He is looking to earn his way back into the battle for the featherweight world title.

During an appearance on the From The Stands podcast, Martin Nguyen was asked which fighter he would prefer to face, given that the winner of this fight might potentially move on to face the winner of the fight between the featherweight champion Tang Kai and the interim titleholder Thanh Le that took place at ONE 166.

“If I were to choose a winner, who would it be? “I would like to see some Vietnamese people achieve success, you know,” Nguyen remarked. “And I want Thanh Le to win, I want myself to win, and I want to give the fans what they want in that rematch,” she said.
At ONE: Inside The Matrix, Le won the featherweight world championship after knocking out Nguyen in the third round with a brutal knockout. Since that time, “The Situ-Asian” has been eagerly anticipating a rematch more than anything else.

Can Martin Nguyen pick up where he left off in his last outing?

Thanh Le was able to successfully defend his championship against Garry Tonon, however at ONE 160, he was defeated by Tang Kai by a unanimous decision.

Since that time, Le has secured his position as the highest-ranked competitor in the division by achieving a remarkable victory over Ilya Freymanov by a submission decision in the first round.

Over the past few years, Martin Nguyen, a fan favorite who is of Vietnamese and Australian descent, has had a difficult time finding his way into the victory column. However, in his most recent match, which was against Leonardo Casotti, he shown a genuine return to form.

Are we going to see ‘The Lion Killer’ add yet another highlight-reel finish to his career in The Land of the Rising Sun, or will Nguyen be able to knock out one of the most highlighted grapplers in the company and punch his ticket to another title fight?

This next Sunday, January 28, ONE 165 will be broadcast live on the global pay-per-view platform watch.onefc.com.
