The goal that Shamil Gasanov has set for himself is to win a world championship in the quickest and most decisive manner feasible.

At ONE Fight Night 12: Superlek vs. Khalilov, which will be streamed on Prime Video, the American submission specialist Garry Tonon will square off against the Russian grappler who competes at the featherweight division’s highest level.

On July 14, at the illustrious Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, this fight between two ranked contenders is scheduled to take place.

In an interview with ONE Championship, Gasanov stated that he intends to keep a level head when he competes against the contender ranked second in the featherweight division.

Gasanov, who is now rated fifth in the division, has stated that before he steps foot between the ropes inside the hallowed arena, he wants to alleviate any and all pressure that may be present.

“I will approach it exactly the same way that I always do, treating it as if it were a regular round of sparring.” I will go into the ring with a level head, concentrating on the task at hand, and maintaining my composure.

Gasanov had one of the best ONE Championship debuts in 2022 when he completely defeated Kim Jae Woong of South Korea at ONE on Prime Video 3 in October of that year. This performance occurred at ONE on Prime Video 3 in 2022.

“The Cobra” was able to effortlessly neutralize Kim’s strikes before grabbing the back and finishing the fight with a rear-naked choke at the end of the first round.

Gasanov received an additional bonus of $50,000 from the CEO of ONE Championship, Chatri Sityodtong, for his outrageous first-round submission victory over Kim.

Tonon, on the other hand, is largely considered to be among the most skilled Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners in the mixed martial arts community.

In May of 2017, the multiple-time BJJ world champion made his debut in ONE Championship, but not in mixed martial arts (MMA), but rather in submission grappling, where he competed against the legendary Shinya Aoki of Japan.

Since then, Tonon has made the switch to mixed martial arts (MMA) and has amassed seven victories, including four finishes through submission. “The Lion Killer” also competed for the ONE featherweight world title, however he was unsuccessful in his attempt to defeat the reigning champion Thanh Le in March of 2022.
