Subriel Matias, the current IBF junior welterweight champion, has provided an overview of his future plans by selecting the fighters he intends to defend his championship against in the near future.

As of right now, Matias is a Puerto Rican boxer who has a professional record of 20-1. During his first fight for the IBF junior welterweight title, which took place in February 2023, he defeated Jeremias Ponce by way of a corner stoppage in the fifth round. This victory was his first victory in the division.

After that, he successfully defended the title against Shohjahon Ergashev at the tail end of 2023, and he accomplished this victory once more by way of a corner stoppage in the fifth round. With this victory, he has now won all twenty of his fights by way of finishes, and the 31-year-old fighter is now looking for the bout that will be the most significant of his career.

According to a recent interview that Matias gave to the Puerto Rican daily El Nuevo Día, he expressed his desire for his subsequent fight to be against Liam Paro and for it to take place in the territory that he calls home.

A summary of the announcement was provided by Michael Benson, the editor of talkSPORT boxing, who also mentioned that Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom boxing, with whom Matias has recently signed a contract, will be responsible for promoting the fight:

“Subriel Matias has said he is expecting to defend his IBF super-lightweight world title vs Liam Paro in Puerto Rico next, seemingly headlining a show promoted by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom on DAZN as he is no longer with Al Haymon’s PBC.”

Eddie Hearn reveals why he signed Subriel Matias to Matchroom Boxing

In a recent interview, Eddie Hearn explained the reasons for the tireless efforts that he and his crew put forth in order to secure Subriel Matias for their promotion.

Matias is still considered to be one of the most promising up-and-coming athletes in the sport, despite the fact that he is 31 years old. In the ninth round of their rematch, he was able to stop Petros Ananyan, taking revenge for the unanimous decision defeat he suffered at the hands of Ananyan. He has triumphed over every challenge he has encountered in the ring up until this point.

In a video that was uploaded to the Matchroom Boxing channel on YouTube, Hearn was seen standing next to Subriel Matias and was questioned about his feelings over the signing of the Puerto Rican boxer. Hearn believes that Matias is one of the most exciting boxers in the sport, and he is looking forward to getting more eyes on him. Matias is a rising star in the sport.

According to Subriel Matias, he is a beast. He is quite exciting. You have to show the world more of him, because then when he faces the big names such as [Devin] Haney and [Gervonta Davis] ‘Tank’, he’s going get what he deserves by becoming a star rather than just a name that not enough people know.”
