Glover Teixeira’s run in the UFC as the light heavyweight champion
As the second-oldest first-time champion in the promotion at 42 years old, Glover Teixeira made promotion history.
Teixeira was set to challenge Jan Bachowicz for the light-heavyweight title on September 25, 2021, but the match was postponed and moved to October 30, 2021. The Brazilian won the light-heavyweight title and the Performance of the Night prize after submitting Bachowicz with a rear-naked choke in the second round.
Ji Procházka was to be Teixeira’s opponent in his first championship defence at UFC 274, however the bout was postponed for an undisclosed reason and finally moved to UFC 275. After a back-and-forth struggle, Procházka submitted Teixeira in the fifth round with a rear-naked choke. Teixeira received the Fight of the Night bonus despite falling short.
Procházka withdrew out of a scheduled rematch with Teixeira due to a shoulder ailment that would require surgery and at least six months of recovery. The vacant championship was given to the victor of the co-main event between previous champion Jan Bachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev, which ended in a draw, because the Brazilian declined a replacement bout against the Russian.
Teixeira competed against Jamahal Hill for the vacant light-heavyweight title at UFC 283. Unfortunately, after being out-punched for five rounds, he was defeated by unanimous decision. In the post-fight interview, the 43-year-old made it known that he was quitting competitive fighting. Teixeira put in a heroic effort and was given the Fight of the Night award despite falling short.Although Teixeira’s reign as the promotion’s light heavyweight champion was punctuated by both victories and defeats, his talent and tenacity made him a tough opponent in the Octagon.
