Danial Williams, a contender for the ONE world title, has explained whence he got his nickname.
In just a few short hours, Williams, better known as “Mini T” by fans of combat sports, will aim to capture his first ONE global championship when he steps inside the famed Lumpinee Boxing Stadium for a battle with the reigning and defending strawweight kickboxing world titleholder Jonathan Di Bella. The fight will take place at the strawweight kickboxing world titleholder’s division.
Ahead of his highly anticipated return on Friday night, Danial Williams sat down with Sportskeeda MMA for an exclusive interview to reflect on his career in combat sports. The interview was published on Sportskeeda MMA. During the course of their talk, Williams shared the story of how he got his nickname and the boxer who was the model for it.
“Are you familiar with the pugilist Tyrone Spong? There was a large picture of him, and one of the first fights he had was against an Australian fighter named Nathan “Carnage” Corbett. However, in one of the first places I trained for Muay Thai, there was a large poster of him from one of the first fights he had against Nathan “Carnage” Corbett. I remember coming in one day when I was 14 years old and having my head shaved.
He continued:
“I walked into the weight room, and the trainer said, ‘Hey! stand right next to that poster,’ and Tyrone Spong was standing right next to it. Everyone at the gym agreed with the statement that you look like Tyrone Spong. Then he said something along the lines of “We’re going to have to start calling you Mini Tyrone.” The situation didn’t improve for Mini T from that point on.”
