Demetrious Johnson is pumped to put his BJJ skills to the test: “This is the only way for me to get a clear picture of where I am right now.”

Mighty Mouse Demetrious Johnson, the current ONE Flyweight Mixed Martial Arts World Champion, is getting set to compete in a new sort of venue in the near future. Jiu-jitsu competitions like the 2023 IBJJF Masters Worlds are on his schedule for the foreseeable future.

The longstanding legend of mixed martial arts has reached the top of his sport and is widely regarded by many as the best mixed martial arts fighter of all time. This achievement has earned him the title of “legend” in the sport. However, the American great, who is now 37 years old, is interested in competing in a new type of combat sport for the very first time in his career.

On the most recent episode of The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Johnson appeared as a special guest to discuss his choice to experiment with pure grappling. Mighty Mouse is quoted as saying:

“So with jiu-jitsu, it’s almost different because I wanna see where I’m at. I’ve been training for a while. Then, when I started training in gi, my goal was to strip away my athletic abilities so that I could focus on developing my gripping skills instead. And I believe that this is the only way for me to find out where I am right now, which is to travel to the Master Worlds and just find out where I am. There are 38 competitors in the bracket, and I want to give it my all when I compete. And absolutely, just watch what takes place.”

There is no question that Demetrious Johnson is one of the finest fighters in the history of mixed martial arts (MMA), but his technique was developed by integrating the most effective aspects of striking and grappling, which resulted in enormous success for him over a period of more than a decade. If we take away the striking component, it will be interesting to watch how ‘Mighty Mouse’ does against some of the most deadly submission grapplers in the world.

This might possibly be preparation for Johnson’s return to ONE Championship action later this year, where it is claimed that he will be scheduled for a confrontation with ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion ‘Darth Rigatoni’ Mikey Musumeci in Qatar. This matchup is expected to take place in Qatar.
