At UFC on Fox 29 in 2018, Dustin Poirier knocked out Justin Gaethje in the fourth round. Since defeating Rafael Fiziev at UFC 286, the No. 3 rated lightweight has been seeking a rematch. The Highlight continued to advocate for the fight while speaking with Damon Martin of MMA Fighting, saying, “I believe that’s the obvious answer. He is number two, and neither he nor I have a partner for the performance. That battle, in my opinion, is unquestionably a contender for the title. I must fight Dustin in August, September, or October to place myself on the ideal schedule because the winner of the fight between Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush will undoubtedly compete for the title in October.
In addition, Justin Gaethje stated that he thought a lot had altered since he first met Dustin Poirier in 2018:
We’re both distinct fighters, I believe. Obviously, since that was five years ago, the playing field has changed, but a battle is a fight. In the end, I believe he is a tremendous fighter, a great opponent for me, and a contender for another Fight of the Century.Gaethje added that he is surrounded by individuals who do not think “The Diamond” will accept the fight because of the potential for injury. Dustin Poirier responds to Justin Gaethje’s call-out
Since beating Rafael Fiziev in a three-round fight at UFC 286, Justin Gaethje has been seeking a chance to square off against Dustin Poirier. ‘The Diamond’ took to Twitter to appear to confirm his interest in a rematch of UFC on Fox 29 with four words, apparently denying yet another call-out in which ‘The Highlight’ claimed that people in the area think the No. 2-ranked lightweight will decline the fight.
The No. 3 ranked lightweight’s recent remark about the “Fight of the Century” in an interview with Damon Martin of MMA Fighting was brought up by Poirier, who did not specifically mention Gaethje. In a 2018 fight that was named Fight of the Night, the No. 2-ranked lightweight was able to beat “The Highlight” via fourth-round TKO. The main event of UFC on Fox 29 has been dubbed the 2018 Fight of the Year by numerous sources.
